Action 52 (NES/Genesis)

It's almost painful to look at this ad, considering how horribly infamous this product is, the poor design of the ad itself notwithstanding. Action 52, of course, was an overpriced NES cartridge containing 52 atrocious games that looked, sounded and played like crap. One can only imagine the numerous heartbreaks that befell the unlucky kids who received the putrid piece of plastic as a Christmas gift or wasted a lot of allowance money to buy it.

This ad appeared a few years after it was first released, which meant a lot of consumers had to have known by then how crummy it was before they considered getting it. Nevertheless, whatever was left of the company that created the game had the nerve to advertise it in time for Christmas '94 within the last few pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly #65 (December 1994). You'd think they would whip up an ad that would make unsuspecting readers think Action 52 was cooler than it really was. As you can tell, though, this page is just as pathetic as the product.

For one thing, the generic, white letters on an ugly, green border seems more appropriate for an advertisement selling a garden tiller in Parade magazine. Second, you have the game's mascot, Cheetaman-- horribly drawn, mind you-- bursting out of a white background with red ribbons and clutching what looks to be the Sega Genesis version of Action 52 adorned with a horrifically cheesy label. Oh, and Cheetaman is wearing a Santa hat.

Amazing how the company could put together the funds to get the product promoted in one of the most popular gaming magazines in the country, yet they couldn't afford to hire a talented artist to make it look credible. And to think they wanted to make a franchise out of the Cheetamen. Sheesh.
